Chapter 4 — She Replaced My Wedding Dress With a Clown Suit—Then the Camera Was Checked

4.9Editorial score

Not that she had stolen my dress.

Not that she had tried to sabotage her son’s wedding.

Her concern was the spectacle.

I looked down at myself.

“Well,” I said, “someone certainly planned a spectacle.”

A few guests laughed.

Victoria’s cheeks flushed.

“You think this is funny?”

“No.

I think it’s revealing.”

She looked at Ethan.

“This is exactly what I warned you about.

Look at her.

She’s standing at your wedding dressed like a clown and humiliating you in front of everyone.”

Ethan stared at his mother.

“No, Mom.

She’s standing here because you tried to humiliate her and she refused to run away.”

Victoria opened her mouth.

He didn’t let her speak.

“You told me for a year that Lily wasn’t right for this family.

You insulted her career, her parents, her clothes and our wedding.

I kept hoping you would stop because I wanted my mother to be part of my life.”

His voice remained controlled, which somehow made the words heavier.

“But you took her wedding dress.

On our wedding day.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

Victoria pointed at me.

“From someone who doesn’t belong in your world.”

The words landed harder than any apology could have repaired.

My mother lowered her tissue.

My father’s jaw tightened.

Ethan looked at Victoria for several seconds.

Then he said, “My world is wherever Lily is.”

Victoria seemed to shrink.

Not physically.

Her posture remained perfect.

Her clothes were immaculate.

Her jewelry still caught the light.

But the authority she had carried into the garden was gone.

She had spent the entire year assuming everyone would eventually agree with her if she pushed hard enough.

Instead, eighty people had just heard her explain herself.

Her husband stood.

“Victoria, where is the dress?”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“Lily’s dress.

Where is it?”

For the first time, she had no polished answer.

Finally she said, “It’s in my car.”

Olivia exhaled loudly behind me.

My father muttered something under his breath.

Ethan closed his eyes for one second.

“You brought it here?” I asked.

Victoria crossed her arms.

“I wasn’t going to destroy it.”
