Beatrice stared at it.
“That proves nothing.”
“I haven’t played it yet.”
Another mistake.
Another silence.
Silas looked slowly from the recorder to his mother.
“You know what’s on it?”
“No.”
“You just told us it proves nothing.”
“I’m saying whatever stunt she prepared—”
“It wasn’t prepared by me.”
Khloe’s throat tightened.
“My father recorded it.”
She pressed the button.
Static crackled softly.
Then Arthur Harding’s voice filled the space between them.
Khloe had listened to the recording only twice before tonight.
The first time, she had been seventeen and shaking so badly she dropped the recorder.
The second time had been six months ago, the night before she applied for a job at Laura.
Hearing him now nearly broke her restraint.
Arthur sounded tired.
But unmistakably himself.
He said he had discovered irregular transfers.
He said Beatrice had confronted him about questions he had asked.
He said he had copied the relevant ledgers because he feared the originals would disappear.
Then came the part Khloe had built five years of her life around.
Arthur described meeting Beatrice privately.
His voice on the recording became quieter as he repeated what she had told him.
Stop asking about the payments.
Stop speaking to Silas’s father.
Forget what you saw.
Arthur said he refused.
Then another voice appeared on the recording.
A woman’s voice.
Low.
Controlled.
unmistakable.
Beatrice.
Even through the old recorder’s thin speaker, her contempt carried clearly.
She told Arthur that men who confused access with importance eventually learned the difference.
Silas’s face went white.
Beatrice lunged toward the recorder.
Silas caught it first.
“Turn that off.”
He didn’t.
The recording continued.
Arthur demanded to know why money was being routed through shell expenses.
Beatrice told him it was none of his concern.
Arthur said Silas’s father would disagree.
Then Beatrice said the sentence that had haunted Khloe for five years.
If you make me choose between this family and you, Arthur, nobody will ever find enough of your courage to bury.
The recording ended.
No one inside Laura moved.
Khloe stared at the table because looking at anyone else would have shattered her.
That voice was the last thing her father had preserved before he vanished.
Beatrice recovered first.
