Chapter 5 — She Said Her Mom Wouldn’t Wake Up—Then He Opened the Green Backpack

4.9Editorial score

Not cruel.

Not deliberately indifferent.

Just busy.

A meeting to reach.

A call to answer.

A schedule too important to interrupt.

He thought of Sophia saying, Everybody just walked fast.

He wondered how many emergencies looked ordinary from ten feet away.

Margaret found him there several minutes later.

“She wants to meet you.”

Jonathan turned.

“Sophia?”

“Her mother.”

Inside the room, Sophia sat beside the bed with her green backpack at her feet.

Her mother looked at Jonathan with tired, confused eyes.

“You’re Jonathan?” she asked weakly.

“Yes.”

“Sophia told me you came with her.”

Jonathan pulled a chair closer but remained standing.

“She came to me.”

Her eyes filled.

“I told her if I ever couldn’t answer her, she had to find an adult.”

“She remembered everything.”

“The backpack?”

“She remembered that too.”

Her mother closed her eyes briefly, overwhelmed.

“I always worried she was too little to understand.”

Jonathan glanced at Sophia.

“She understood enough to save your life.”

The room became silent.

Sophia’s mother began crying.

Sophia immediately reached for her hand.

“Don’t cry, Mommy.

I found a grown-up.”

Her mother looked at Jonathan again.

“Thank you for stopping.”

Jonathan had received awards in ballrooms where people applauded speeches written by publicists.

He had heard partners praise him after deals that made everyone richer.

He had seen his name printed on buildings.

Nothing embarrassed him more than those five words.

Because stopping should not have been extraordinary.

“You don’t owe me anything,” he said.

“Your daughter did the brave part.”

Her mother gave a tired smile.

“She usually does.”

Jonathan finally sat down.

They spoke only briefly.

She needed rest, and Sophia needed sleep more than she wanted to admit.

Before Jonathan left, he crouched beside the little girl.

“You keep that backpack close, okay?”

Sophia nodded.

“And listen to your mom.”

“I do.”

Jonathan smiled.

“I noticed.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck.
