Ramona stared at me.
“I would have happily paid for my own room.
You hid the fact that I didn’t have one because you wanted me to arrive here before finding out.”
“That is your interpretation.”
“No,” Tomás said.
His voice was quiet now.
“It isn’t.”
Ramona turned toward him.
He looked devastated rather than angry.
“You let me bring my wife here knowing she had nowhere to stay.”
“I knew she would create some solution.
She always does.”
“That doesn’t make it better.”
Ramona crossed her arms.
“You don’t understand how humiliating this is for me.”
Mónica gave a short, disbelieving breath.
“For you?”
Ramona stared at her daughter.
Mónica looked frightened, but she did not look away this time.
“You said Olivia wouldn’t fit in here in front of everyone,” she said.
“You wanted her to be humiliated.”
“I was making the best of an awkward situation.”
“You created the situation.”
Ramona’s face tightened.
Then she made her final mistake.
She looked at the manager and said, “I don’t know why your staff is treating her like some important guest.
She is here because of me.”
The manager remained composed.
“Mrs.
Mendoza’s professional relationship with Coral B predates this family reservation.”
Ramona blinked.
Tomás looked at me again.
The manager continued carefully, revealing no confidential details.
“Olivia has worked with our team on a significant project.
Several members of management know her personally because of that work.”
Ramona’s mouth parted.
I watched the realization travel across her face.
The calls.
The manager knowing my name.
The follow-up meeting.
My complete lack of panic when she handed out every key except mine.
All the pieces finally connected.
“You worked here?” Tomás asked.
“With the resort on a project,” I said.
“Not for the resort directly.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried telling you about my work for years.
Eventually I realized nobody was listening unless there was something to criticize.”
That landed harder than I intended.
Tomás looked down.
Ramona, however, was not finished.
“So this was a trap.”
“No.”
“You used your connections to make me look bad.”
“I haven’t asked anyone here to do anything to you.”
The manager nodded slightly.
