Chapter 1 — The Camera Revealed Who Was Sleeping Beside Her Eight-Year-Old Daughter

4.9Editorial score

The figure on my phone lowered himself onto Mika’s mattress, and for several seconds I could only stare.

It was Ramón.

My husband.

The same man who had looked me in the eye and said, “Children imagine things.

Our house is safe.”

He was still wearing the dark trousers he used at the hospital.

His shirt was wrinkled, his shoulders bent with exhaustion.

He had apparently arrived home without waking me, walked past our bedroom, and gone straight into Mika’s room.

On the camera, he sat beside her for a moment.

Then he removed his shoes.

He pulled the blanket carefully over Mika’s shoulder, brushed a strand of hair away from her face, and lay down beside her.

Mika instinctively shifted away from him.

There it was.

The answer to the mystery.

Her body moved toward the edge of the mattress as Ramón took up the empty half of the bed.

My daughter had not imagined someone beside her.

She simply had never been awake long enough to see who it was.

I should have been angry first.

Instead, I cried.

Not loudly.

I sat on the floor beside the sofa with one hand over my mouth while tears rolled down my face.

On the screen, Ramón turned toward Mika.

He didn’t wake her.

He didn’t speak.

He simply looked at her.

For nearly a minute, he watched our daughter sleep with an expression I had not seen on his face in a long time.

Then he reached out and held her tiny hand.

That was when something inside me broke.

Ramón had always been a devoted father, but his work at the city hospital had swallowed more and more of his days.

Some mornings he left before Mika woke.

Some nights he returned after she had gone to bed.

There were weeks when their conversations happened mostly through messages I relayed between them.

“Tell Dad I got a perfect score.”

“Tell Mika I’m proud of her.”

“Tell Dad I drew him something.”

“Tell her I’ll look at it when I get home.”

But home kept coming later.

Dinner became a plate covered in the refrigerator.

Bedtime became my responsibility alone.

School mornings became rushed kisses if Ramón happened to be awake before leaving again.

I knew the schedule was hurting him.

I just had not realized what he had been doing about it.

I remained on the living-room floor and watched.

At 2:07 a.m., Ramón’s eyes closed.

A few minutes later he was asleep.

Mika rolled toward the far edge of the mattress, exactly as she had described.

The bed was not physically small.

It was crowded by the father she believed had been sleeping in another room.

I looked toward our bedroom.

His side of our bed was empty.

Suddenly I remembered mornings when I had awakened and found him there beside me, assuming he had come home and slipped quietly under the covers.

Now I wondered how much of the night he had actually spent with Mika first.

I did not wake him immediately.

I sat there until almost three, watching the two of them sleep.

Then Mika moved again.

Her arm slipped off the side of the bed.
