Nathan looked at Emma.
“It was dangerous.”
“I know.” Rachel nodded.
“But she did something I couldn’t do yet.”
“What?”
“She decided we deserved help.”
Emma was busy trying to catch a moth circling the porch light.
She had no idea the adults were talking about her.
Nathan looked back at his own house, where the garage lights had already switched on automatically.
Good lights.
He finally understood what Emma had meant.
They were not good because they were expensive or bright.
They were good because someone had answered beneath them.
Rachel opened her repaired door.
Emma ran inside with her stuffed rabbit.
The lock clicked behind them.
This time, the sound did not mean someone was trapped.
It meant they were safe enough to close the door themselves.
