Sophie understood before Leo did.
Matteo could not simply make the problem disappear.
The denied insurance claim already existed in a regulated system.
The serial numbers had been flagged.
Sophie had reviewed them.
Her abduction would draw attention toward the claim, the shell company, and anyone connected to it.
Killing her would turn an internal theft into a federal searchlight.
Leo saw the same calculation arrive in Matteo’s eyes.
“You’re going to believe an accountant over me?” he demanded.
“Actuary,” Sophie said.
Leo turned on her.
“Nobody cares.”
“You cared enough to kidnap me.”
He crossed the space between them.
This time Matteo did not need to signal.
The youngest kidnapper stepped in front of Sophie and blocked Leo’s path.
Leo stared at him in disbelief.
“You work for me.”
The young man swallowed.
“I work for Mr.
Romano.”
That was the moment Leo understood he had lost the room.
His shoulders lowered, but the surrender was false.
Sophie saw his right hand move toward the inside of his coat.
“Gun,” she said.
The warning came before thought.
Matteo pivoted.
One guard caught Leo’s arm while another removed the weapon.
No shot was fired.
The struggle lasted less than three seconds.
When it ended, Leo was on his knees, breathing hard, his wrists secured with the same industrial zip ties used on Sophie.
She looked at the locking heads.
“They’re fastened incorrectly,” she said.
No one laughed.
Matteo almost did.
Leo raised his head.
“You think she saved you? She destroyed you.
That insurance file points to your company.”
Matteo crouched in front of him.
“No.
It points to a holding company you controlled.”
“You signed the authorization.”
“On documents you prepared.”
Leo’s confidence flickered.
Sophie leaned forward.
“The claim submission records will include device information, access logs, timestamps, and account changes.
If you altered documents after authorization, the audit trail will show it.”
Leo looked at her as if he wanted to erase the words from the air.
Matteo stood.
“What happens if your firm receives the locker records?” he asked Sophie.
“The fraud team will compare them with the denied claim.
They will notify counsel.
Counsel will notify federal investigators.”
“And if you disappear?”
“The same process happens, except my disappearance becomes part of it.”
Matteo looked around the warehouse.
