We failed you.”

Sophie opened the napkin she still carried in her coat pocket.

The coins were inside.

“I can pay the two dollars.”

Linda’s eyes filled.

“No, sweetheart.

Keep it.”

“I said I would bring the rest later.”

“You don’t owe me anything.”

Sophie considered this, then placed one quarter in Linda’s palm.

“For the next person who needs soup.”

Linda closed her fingers around it.

When Mara returned home, the apartment was warm.

The broken window frame had been replaced.

The lock downstairs worked.

The red notice was gone.

She resumed work after her doctor cleared her, and she kept her agreement to repay part of the missed rent over time.

Alexander did not erase every difficulty from her life.

He could not.

What he could do was stop profiting from difficulties his company had refused to see.

Months later, he returned to Carney’s Diner during another snowfall.

A wooden board now hung behind the counter.

It held small blank tokens purchased by customers who wanted to prepay for a meal.

No names were written on them.

Anyone who needed food could quietly take one.

The first token had been bought with Sophie’s quarter.

Linda kept it beneath the register after replacing its value from her own pocket.

Alexander sat in his usual back booth.

The bell above the door rang.

Sophie entered wearing the same brown coat, though her sneakers were dry this time.

Mara followed behind her, healthier and steady on her feet.

Sophie climbed onto the red stool and ordered two bowls of chicken soup.

When Linda set down the water glasses, one drop spilled across the counter.

Sophie reached for a napkin.

Linda gently stopped her hand.

“I’ve got it,” she said.

Around them, the trucker, the older couple, and several familiar customers looked up.

This time, no one looked away.
