She did not understand every legal phrase, and she was not foolish enough to pretend she did.

But she understood one thing.

Laurent’s claim that no agreement existed was impossible.

His own name was on the page.

She pointed to it.

“That’s your signature.”

Laurent’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t know what you’re looking at.”

The boss spoke.

Maya answered him in his dialect.

A change passed over his face.

Not warmth exactly.

Recognition.

Until then, he had treated her as a useful stranger.

Now he seemed to realize she understood not only his words, but the differences in emphasis Laurent had missed.

The formal phrases.

The insult hidden inside Laurent’s dismissal.

The distinction between asking for a bottle of wine and asking why a promise had been broken.

He asked Maya another question.

She looked at Laurent before translating.

“He wants to know whether you were informed that he would be here tonight.”

Laurent hesitated.

That pause was the answer.

Maya had spent years carrying plates through rooms full of powerful people.

She knew hesitation.

Wealthy men used it before denying something they had already decided to deny.

Managers used it before blaming staff.

Customers used it before claiming a mistake was someone else’s.

Laurent recovered.

“No.”

One of the five men reached inside his jacket.

Several diners stiffened.

But instead of a weapon, he removed a second envelope.

Maya felt Laurent’s attention lock onto it.

The man placed it on the table.

The Sicilian said three words.

Maya translated.

“He says, ‘Open that too.’”

Laurent stepped forward.

“No.”

It came out too fast.

Too loud.

The entire restaurant heard it.

Maya looked at him.

Laurent realized his mistake.

“I mean, there is no reason to involve staff in private correspondence.”

Maya did not touch the second envelope yet.

She asked the Sicilian a question in his language.

For the first time, one of his men glanced at another.

Laurent stared at her.

“What did you say?”

Maya ignored him.

The boss answered.

She nodded.

Then she opened the second envelope.

Inside was a copy of a message bearing Laurent’s name.
