I opened my eyes.
Daniel stopped the video.
“There’s more,” he said.
“Play it.”
“Mr.
Whitmore—”
“Play it.”
He did.
Amelia moved closer to Caroline.
“You promised me Preston would never lose everything because of this.”
“And he won’t.”
“That’s not what I’m asking.”
Caroline’s expression hardened.
“Listen to me.
James transferred the lake house because he believes he’s helping his son start a family.
That transfer is done.
Whatever happens later, you and Preston have an asset between you.
If your marriage survives, fine.
If it doesn’t, you won’t walk away with nothing.”
Amelia covered her mouth.
“I don’t want his house.”
“Then stop acting like a frightened child and decide what you do want.”
For the first time, Amelia sounded angry.
“I want to tell him.”
Caroline stepped toward her.
“Not tonight.”
“He’s going to find out.”
“Not tonight.”
“He’s standing out there thinking that child is his.”
“And if you tell him now, you humiliate him in front of two hundred people, destroy his wedding, and send James straight to his cardiologist.
Is that what you want?”
Amelia started crying.
Caroline lowered her voice again.
“Smile through the reception.
Go home with your husband.
Give everyone a week to breathe.
Then we decide what Preston needs to know and how.”
Amelia stared at her.
“You mean what you decide he needs to know.”
Caroline did not answer.
The video continued for another twenty seconds.
Amelia wiped her eyes, put the deed folder on a table, and walked out first.
Caroline remained behind long enough to check her reflection in the mirror.
Then she smiled at herself and followed.
Daniel paused the footage.
I remained in the chair.
I had expected betrayal when I drove to the restaurant.
I had imagined theft, perhaps.
A forged document.
Some scheme involving the lake house.
I had not imagined my wife deliberately helping my son’s pregnant bride conceal that he might not be the baby’s father until after the wedding.
“How did you find this?” I asked.
Daniel explained that a server had reported a damaged gift cart near the bridal suite.
Management reviewed the corridor video to determine when it happened.
While checking the footage, Daniel noticed Caroline repeatedly looking down the hallway before entering the room.
He turned up the audio expecting to hear something about the damaged cart.
