“The people deciding know I want you both here.

Whatever happens, no one will make a decision without you knowing.”

Emma studied his face.

“You don’t promise things you can’t promise.”

“No.”

She nodded as though that answer made her feel safer than a grand assurance would have.

Nearly a year after the night in the freight yard, the court approved Daniel as the twins’ permanent guardian.

At the final hearing, Emma and Grace sat together with Rex stretched across their shoes.

Daniel wore a dark suit that felt less comfortable than any uniform he had ever owned.

The judge asked the girls whether they understood the decision.

Grace looked at Daniel.

“He comes back when he says he will,” she said.

Emma added, “And he doesn’t make me stand in front anymore.”

Daniel looked down because, for a moment, he could not trust his face.

That evening, rain tapped softly against the windows of their home.

The sound once would have returned the twins to the freezing container, the darkness, and the fear that every approaching light belonged to their father.

Now Grace slept with Rex curled beside her bed.

Emma walked past Daniel’s open door without stopping to check whether he was still there.

She already knew.

The cracked phone remained locked away, no longer a secret two children had to protect with their bodies.

It had done what Emma needed it to do.

It had carried their truth into a room where power, papers, and confident lies had nearly drowned them out.

Daniel had found the twins because Rex stopped beside a rusted container.

But the girls had saved themselves long before he arrived.

Grace protected the evidence.

Emma protected Grace.

And when the moment came, both of them found the courage to let the truth play.
