For three seconds, neither girl moved.
Alexander kept his hand extended without stepping closer.
He had negotiated billion-dollar contracts across tables crowded with people waiting for him to blink, but nothing had ever made him feel as exposed as two frightened children deciding whether his hand was safe.
Lily looked at his face.
“Are you going to leave too?”
The question landed harder than any accusation.
“No,” Alexander said.
“People say that,” Chloe whispered.
Alexander glanced at the empty road where their father had disappeared.
He understood what she meant.
Promises were only sounds until someone stayed long enough to prove them.
He lowered himself again.
“I can’t change what he did,” he said.
“But I can stay until the people coming to help you arrive.
After that, I’ll stay as long as they allow me.”
Lily studied him with the solemn concentration of someone much older than five.
“That isn’t forever.”
“No,” Alexander admitted.
“Not yet.”
The girls looked at each other.
Then Lily placed her cold hand in his.
Chloe followed, wrapping three small fingers around his thumb.
Alexander closed his hand carefully around both of theirs.
“Well,” he said, the words escaping before caution could stop them, “then I guess I’m your dad now.”
It was reckless, legally meaningless, and completely sincere.
The emergency responders arrived minutes later.
Alexander answered questions while the girls remained pressed against his legs.
He gave his full name, identification, address, attorney’s contact information, and permission for every background check anyone wanted to conduct.
When a child welfare worker explained that wealth did not allow him to take two children home simply because he had found them, Alexander did not argue.
“Good,” he said.
“Do not make an exception for me.
Do every check.
Just don’t separate them.”
The worker looked down at Lily and Chloe, who were still holding hands.
“We’ll avoid that if we can.”
“If you can?” Alexander’s voice hardened.
The girls flinched.
He noticed immediately and softened his tone.
“What would make it certain?”
The worker explained the process.
Medical examinations.
Police reports.
An emergency placement review.
A search for relatives.
A court authorization before any long-term arrangement could be considered.
Alexander listened without interrupting.
Then he called his attorney and instructed the driver to cancel every meeting on his schedule.
“All of them?” the driver asked.
Alexander looked at Chloe, who had begun shivering beneath his jacket.
“All of them.”
At the hospital, the girls were examined for dehydration, exposure, and hunger.
Neither had a serious injury, but both were exhausted.
Chloe refused to release Lily’s hand even when the nurse needed to take her temperature.
Alexander sat beside the examination bed in a damp shirt that probably cost more than the room’s monthly electricity bill.
His phone continued vibrating until he shut it off completely.
Lily watched him do it.
