Chapter 3 — They Abandoned Her Wedding For A Lie Built On Her Husband’s Land

4.9Editorial score

My parents had not simply missed my wedding.

They had ignored the warning that could have saved them from public disgrace because it came from the man they looked down on.

My father cleared his throat.

‘Okay.

Fine.

Maybe mistakes were made.

But the bank people are saying they can’t release funds unless the ownership issue is settled.

Victor is saying Trevor can sign a temporary acknowledgment.

Just something to calm everyone down.’

Trevor gave a quiet, humorless breath.

‘A temporary acknowledgment that I agreed to sell land I never agreed to sell?’

‘Don’t twist this.’

‘That is exactly what it is.’

My mother’s voice sharpened.

‘Audrey, tell your husband to stop embarrassing your sister.’

The room moved around me.

The chairs.

The cake.

The windows.

The gray water.

For years, that voice had been enough to make me apologize for being inconvenient.

It had made me loan money I needed, leave work early, drive Khloe to appointments she forgot, cover bills my parents called temporary, smile in family photos after being treated like furniture.

But something about standing in my wedding dress beside a cake they had not cared enough to see made the spell break cleanly.

I picked up the phone.

‘Mom,’ I said.

She exhaled like she expected surrender.

I looked at Trevor.

He did not nod.

He did not coach me.

He simply stood close enough that I knew I was not alone.

‘You left thirty-seven chairs empty today,’ I said.

‘You do not get to call me from Khloe’s party and ask me to make Trevor disappear too.’

Silence hit the line.

Then Khloe came on, sobbing so hard her words stuck together.

‘Audrey, please.

Everyone is staring.

Victor says this is Trevor’s fault.

He says Trevor is trying to ruin us because you’re jealous.’

That hurt more than I wanted it to.

Khloe had always been protected from consequence so thoroughly that she mistook rescue for love.

But she was still my sister, and underneath her panic I heard something new.

Fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not drama.

Real fear.

‘Khloe,’ I said carefully, ‘did Victor tell you Trevor owned the land?’

She sniffed.

‘He said Trevor leased some ugly repair place on the corner.

He said once Harbor Crown was built, everybody would see what real success looked like.’

Earl muttered, ‘Ugly repair place feeds seven families.’

Trevor set a hand on the folder to keep the papers from sliding.

I closed my eyes for one second.

Victor had not just lied to investors.

He had lied to Khloe too, or at least fed her the version she wanted to believe.

He had turned my family’s snobbery into fuel.

‘Listen to me,’ I told her.
