Carlos looked away first.
Diego finally walked toward the gate.
He did not reach for the notebook or the deed.
He simply stood across from me.
“Mom,” he said quietly, “I saw the message when Carlos removed you.”
Carlos turned toward him.
“Diego.”
Diego ignored him.
“I should have said something.”
It was not a grand apology.
That was why I believed it.
I nodded once.
“Yes.
You should have.”
Diego swallowed.
“I’m sorry.”
Laura exhaled loudly.
“Are we all doing this here? At the gate?”
I looked at her.
“You all planned the weekend without me.
The gate is the first place everyone is finally having the same conversation.”
Juan lowered his eyes, but I could see him fighting a smile.
Carlos noticed too.
“This isn’t funny.”
Juan’s expression became neutral immediately.
“No, señor.”
Carlos returned his attention to me.
“What do you want, Mom?”
That question surprised me.
Not because it was difficult.
Because I could not remember the last time he had asked it.
“I want you to ask before coming.”
He stared.
“That’s it?”
“No.
I want you to stop treating my age like permission to make decisions around me.
I want nobody entering my home because they know where I hide a key.
I want people who sleep in my beds to remember there is a person washing those sheets.
And I want you never again to speak to me as though being seventy-six means I stopped being an adult.”
Carlos’s face changed slightly.
The anger was still there, but now embarrassment sat beside it.
Laura looked away.
Several of the others did too.
For years, I had made everything easy for them.
I had thought that was kindness.
Perhaps it had been, at first.
But kindness without limits had slowly taught them the wrong lesson.
They had learned that the farm was always available.
That the refrigerator would always be full.
That beds would always be clean.
That the key would always be under the flowerpot.
And eventually they had begun confusing my generosity with their entitlement.
Carlos put both hands on the gate.
“So the weekend is canceled.”
“Yes.”
“You won’t change your mind?”
