When Sofia reached the part about Javier standing outside the door, her voice almost disappeared.
“I heard him,” she said.
“I know his voice.”
The betrayal seemed to hurt more than the bruises.
Carmen had never pretended to love Sofia.
Javier had.
He had smiled through vows only hours earlier.
He had held Sofia’s hands in front of family and promised to protect her.
Then, according to Sofia, he had stood outside a locked hotel room while his mother tried to beat a signature out of his new wife.
By sunrise, police had taken an initial statement.
Alexander gave them the hotel information and explained that he had already asked management to preserve footage and key-card data.
An officer warned us not to contact Carmen or Javier.
We didn’t have to.
Javier called first.
Sofia’s phone began vibrating on the hospital chair.
Once.
Twice.
Then again.
Messages appeared, but we did not answer.
Alexander glanced at the screen without opening anything.
“Save every message,” he said.
By midmorning, Javier’s tone had changed from concerned husband to furious owner.
Where are you?
Come back so we can talk.
My mother says you attacked her.
You’re making this worse.
Don’t involve outsiders in family business.
Then came the message that made Sofia stare at the phone for nearly a minute.
You humiliated my family after everything we spent on this wedding.
Sofia looked at me.
“Not one question about whether I’m hurt.”
I had no answer.
Later that morning, Carmen called.
We let it ring.
She left a voicemail.
Her voice was calm.
Almost offended.
She claimed Sofia had become hysterical in the suite, insulted the family, and fled after an argument about marital responsibilities.
She did not mention the folder.
She did not mention the condo.
She did not mention why six women had been inside the honeymoon suite after the groom walked away.
Alexander listened once and saved the recording.
“She’s already building her story,” he said.
The hotel records began tearing that story apart.
Investigators obtained hallway video showing Javier entering the honeymoon suite with Sofia after the reception.
Later, Javier left alone.
Roughly twenty minutes after that, Carmen approached the room with six women.
They entered.
They remained inside for a long stretch.
Javier returned to the hallway during that period.
He did not enter immediately.
He stayed outside.
The camera had no useful audio of what was said through the door, so it could not prove Sofia’s exact memory of his cruel sentence.
But it proved something Carmen had already tried to deny.
The women had been there.
Javier had been outside.
