“Already somewhere you can’t reach.”
His panic became anger.
“You set us up.”
I opened my eyes.
“You poured boiling oil on me.”
He looked away.
That single movement told me more than an apology ever could.
Evelyn did not look away.
“You knew,” she said.
“Enough to wait.”
Her mouth hardened.
“For what?”
“For you to stop hiding what you were.”
She lunged for the folder.
I let her take it.
She flipped through the authorization pages, scanning clauses she had clearly never bothered to read.
The paper shook in her hands.
“There must be a cancellation provision.”
“There is.”
Her eyes snapped toward me.
“Then cancel it.”
“I can’t.”
“You own the trust.”
“That’s why I can’t.”
My father had anticipated exactly that demand.
Once the emergency protocol was triggered, I temporarily lost unilateral authority to reverse it.
The freeze could only be lifted after independent review confirmed that I was safe and acting freely.
In other words, they couldn’t torture me into undoing the protection.
The poison pill wasn’t designed to punish an attacker.
It was designed to make coercion useless.
David began pacing.
“The Petrovs aren’t going to care about any of this.
They want their money tonight.”
Evelyn turned on him.
“How much time do you have?”
He didn’t answer.
She slapped the folder against his chest.
“How much time?”
“I told you.
Midnight.”
That explained the party.
The crowd wasn’t merely camouflage.
It was a deadline disguised as celebration.
Evelyn had filled the penthouse with wealthy acquaintances, society friends, and business contacts so nobody would question why David and I were present together.
If something happened to me, dozens of people could say the evening had seemed perfectly normal.
A kitchen accident.
An overwhelmed wife.
A concerned husband taking temporary control.
They had built themselves a story before they attacked me.
Unfortunately for them, my father had built a better system.
A heavy knock struck the kitchen door.
All three of us froze.
Someone outside called David’s name.
He looked at Evelyn.
She put one finger to her lips.
Another knock.
