“Release the first package,” he said.

The two men went still.

The lawyer asked one question Claire couldn’t fully hear.

Vincent answered, “Yes.

Tonight.”

Then he ended the call.

The taller man stared at him.

“What package?”

Vincent leaned back.

“The kind that makes people explain where money went.”

No one needed more detail.

The second man’s face drained of color.

He looked at his partner.

That reaction told Claire more than any confession could have.

Vincent had spent months appearing defeated while collecting proof.

Not to rebuild an empire.

To keep the people stripping it apart from using his name as cover.

The taller man tried one last attack.

“You think they’ll forgive this?”

“I stopped asking for forgiveness a long time ago.”

“Then what do you want?”

Vincent looked around Manny’s diner.

At the cracked vinyl stools.

At old Danny.

At the frightened young couple.

At Manny, who had apparently been paying rent to a friend who secretly held his building.

Finally, at Claire.

“I want my name off things I didn’t authorize,” he said.

“I want this place left alone.

And I want you out before I finish my coffee.”

The taller man stared at him for several seconds.

Then he picked up the folder.

“This isn’t over.”

Vincent glanced at his cup.

“Then you’re wasting time.”

The two men left.

The bell above the door rang once.

The sedan pulled away.

Nobody in the diner moved until its taillights disappeared.

Then Manny rounded the counter.

He stopped beside Vincent.

“Eleven years?”

Vincent sighed.

“Manny—”

“Eleven years you owned the note on this place and never told me?”

“Technically a company owned it.”

“I will kill you myself.”

Old Danny finally spoke.

“Get in line.”

The young couple laughed nervously.

Even Claire did.

Vincent stared at Manny.

Then something extraordinary happened.

He laughed too.

Not loudly.

Not for long.
