I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of records from Wright Holdings LLC and the Wright Family Trust.
“Five years ago,” I said, “you were three months from losing the Maple Ridge house.”
Dad’s mouth tightened.
“That was handled.”
“Yes.
By me.”
He frowned.
“No.
Helen’s estate cleared something.”
“My inheritance was Helen’s estate.
Wright Holdings purchased the house for $520,000 cash.
The company owns it.”
My mother gripped the edge of the table.
Vanessa whispered, “You own Mom and Dad’s house?”
“My company does.
They were allowed to stay there because I wanted them safe.”
Dad stood so abruptly that the chair scraped backward.
“You’ve been our landlord?”
“No rent has ever been collected.”
“That’s not the point.”
“Then what is?”
He had no answer.
So I continued.
“The $3,200 you receive every month from the Wright Family Trust is also from me.”
My mother began crying.
Not loudly.
Just a slow collapse of the face as years of assumptions caught up with her.
“We thought that came from your father’s old retirement arrangements.”
“I know.”
Dad looked at her.
“You told me it did.”
“Because that’s what you told me!”
For the first time, their certainty began turning on itself.
Vanessa sank onto the arm of my sofa.
“How much have you given them?”
I didn’t answer.
The total wasn’t the point.
The point was that for years I had protected people who believed I needed to be hidden from their successful guests.
My father turned back to me.
“Are you threatening to throw us out?”
“No.”
He seemed surprised.
“I’m not humiliating you the way you humiliated me.
You will have time to make plans.
But the arrangement changes now.”
I slid a letter across the table.
“The monthly trust distributions end after the next payment.
You can remain in the house for ninety days without charge.
After that, if you want to stay, the property manager will offer you a standard lease at a fair local rate.
Or you can move.”
Mom stared at me.
“Isabelle, please.”
“I’ve been supporting you quietly because I loved you.
Not because you were entitled to it.”
Dad’s face darkened.
