Chapter 1 — They Fed My Five-Year-Old Cold Rice—Then Reached for My Savings

“Fraud investigations.

May I have your case number?”

The woman’s voice filled the kitchen.

Ryan stared at the folded salon receipt in my hand.

Carol’s remote slipped slightly against her palm.

Even Megan stopped licking butter from her fingers.

I read the number slowly.

The representative asked me to confirm my identity.

I gave her the information while keeping my eyes on Ryan.

He had been furious seconds earlier, but now he looked like a man trying to calculate how much I knew.

Leo pressed against the back of my leg.

The representative returned to the line.

“Yes, Mrs.

Lauren Parker.

I see the restriction you placed this afternoon.

Your accounts remain frozen against electronic changes and outgoing transfers.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

Carol stood.

“Why would you freeze family money?”

I lifted one finger without looking at her.

The representative continued.

“The original request attempted to add an authorized party and raise the transfer limit.

Because the verification could not be completed, no changes were approved.”

“Who was the authorized party?” I asked.

There was a brief pause while she reviewed the case.

“The request listed Carol Parker.”

Megan’s fork dropped onto her paper plate.

Carol’s face hardened, but she did not look surprised.

Ryan stepped toward the phone.

“This is ridiculous.

Hang up, Lauren.

We can explain.”

I took one step back.

“You had all evening to explain.”

The representative asked whether I recognized or approved the request.

“No,” I said.

“I did not.”

“Then I’ll document that as an unauthorized account-change attempt.

The investigation team may contact you for additional information.

Please do not share your temporary security credentials with anyone.”

“I won’t.”

I ended the call.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the refrigerator humming and Leo breathing behind me.

Then Carol laughed.

It was not a nervous laugh.

It was the dry, dismissive sound she used whenever she wanted to make someone else feel foolish.

“Oh, please.

Nobody was stealing from you.

Ryan wanted me added so I could help manage things.

You’re never home.”

I looked at my husband.

“Is that true?”

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

“Mom was only trying to help.

We were going to talk to you.”

“After you raised the transfer limit?”
