He asked her to check the executive block.
She told him the hotel was full.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Lupita continued.
“He asked again because his daughter was asleep.
Karla said people think complaining makes luxury suites appear.
Patricia suggested he try a cheaper place.”
Daniel looked at Patricia.
“Is that accurate?”
Patricia’s eyes filled with panic.
“I was trying to manage the desk during a very busy evening.”
“That isn’t what he asked,” Daniel said.
Karla spoke quickly.
“We didn’t know who he was.”
The sentence landed harder than she seemed to realize.
Ethan’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
Daniel closed his eyes for one brief moment.
Karla realized too late what she had admitted.
Ethan adjusted Lily’s weight in his arms.
“That,” he said, “is exactly the problem.”
Lily stirred.
Her eyelids fluttered open.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here.”
“Are we at the hotel?”
“Yes.”
She saw the roses and touched one bent petal with a sleepy finger.
“They got squished.”
“A little.”
“Mommy still gets them, right?”
The entire desk seemed to disappear from Ethan’s attention.
He kissed Lily’s forehead.
“She still gets them.”
Patricia lowered her eyes.
For the first time, the flowers no longer looked cheap or inconvenient to her.
They looked like what they were: something a widowed father had carried through airport delays because his daughter associated them with her mother.
Daniel handed Ethan the key himself.
“Suite 904 is ready.
I’ll escort you upstairs.”
Ethan looked toward Lupita.
“Would you come with us?”
Lupita blinked.
“Me?”
“If you have a moment.”
Daniel nodded immediately.
Lupita followed them toward the elevators.
Behind them, Patricia and Karla remained at the desk beneath the bright lobby lights while several guests pretended not to watch.
Inside the elevator, Daniel looked sick with embarrassment.
“Ethan, I’m deeply sorry.”
Ethan kept his eyes on Lily, who was already drifting back toward sleep.
“I didn’t come here looking for apologies.”
“I know.”
“I came because the quarterly service scores improved sharply.
Complaint closures are faster.
Guest satisfaction is up.”
