She laughed, the last tension leaving her shoulders.

Before they departed, Annie returned briefly to the ballroom.

The event director was helping a server fold linens near table 19.

Annie thanked her for speaking honestly.

The woman glanced toward the kitchen.

“We have enough food left for the entire night staff.”

“Then let them eat it while it’s warm,” Annie said.

The director smiled.

“Where should we seat them?”

Annie looked at table 19.

The shame corner.

The place selected for the woman Julian believed had no value.

“Start here,” she said.

Minutes later, cooks, servers, cleaners, drivers, and musicians filled the back tables.

Plates covered the white cloth.

Someone brought out the cake.

Laughter replaced the cruel silence Beatrice had planned.

Annie left the torn invitation inside the cream folder and carried it away with her—not as evidence she still needed, but as proof of a chapter that had finally ended.

Silas opened the Bentley door.

She took his hand and stepped inside.

The car moved beneath the lights of the hotel bearing his family’s name, across the land Julian had assumed belonged to people like him.

Annie did not look back.

She had arrived expecting to face the life that rejected her.

Instead, she discovered it had become far too small to contain her.
