Chapter 2 — Two Days Into Marriage, He Slapped Me—Then He Saw My Phone

4.9Editorial score

“We’re all emotional.

Let’s not do something stupid because of one argument.”

One argument.

He had already reduced the slap to an argument.

“Did you hit me?” I asked.

His mouth tightened.

“I already told you what happened.”

“Say it clearly.”

Vanessa stood from the couch.

“Daniel, don’t answer her.

She’s trying to trap you.”

That sentence told me everything I needed to know about the two of them.

Neither was asking whether I was hurt.

Neither was shocked that Daniel had struck his wife two days after the wedding.

Their concern was the phone.

The evidence.

The possibility that somebody outside that living room might hear the truth without Daniel controlling how it was told.

I picked up the phone.

Daniel took one step toward me.

I stepped back.

He stopped.

I looked straight at him.

“Don’t come any closer.”

For once, he listened.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“So what now? You’re going to call somebody because your husband lost his temper once?”

“Vanessa,” Daniel snapped.

She looked at him, surprised.

He had finally understood that every sentence was making things worse.

I understood something too.

If I stayed, the conversation would keep changing shape.

The slap would become a misunderstanding.

The misunderstanding would become my fault.

By morning, I would probably be told I had provoked him by refusing to carry a plate ten feet across the room.

So I stopped arguing.

I walked toward the hallway.

Daniel followed several feet behind me.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m getting my things.”

“Emily, don’t be ridiculous.”

I kept walking.

His tone hardened again.

“You’re really leaving over this?”

That question almost hurt more than the slap.

Not because it made me doubt myself.

Because it showed me how small the act looked from his side.

“I’m leaving because you hit me,” I said.

He rubbed both hands across his face.

“I barely touched you.”

I stopped in the hallway.

My phone was still recording.

Daniel realized it half a second too late.

His eyes dropped toward my hand.

“Emily—”

“Thank you,” I said.

“For what?”
