So did Adrian.
He removed a small recording device from his case and placed it on the table.
A green light glowed.
“For clarity,” he said, “this conversation is being preserved.”
Kyle lunged toward it.
A security officer stepped between them.
“Do not touch the evidence.”
“Evidence?” Kyle snapped.
“You entered my home without permission.”
Adrian held up the deed.
“This is not your home.”
The words echoed through the foyer.
For the first time that night, Kyle looked genuinely frightened.
His phone rang again.
This time, the name of the chairman appeared on the screen.
Kyle answered and immediately turned away.
“Martin, listen to me.
Whatever you received is a misunderstanding.”
The voice on the other end was loud enough that several of us heard fragments.
Emergency meeting.
Suspension.
Misrepresented collateral.
Independent audit.
Kyle’s shoulders stiffened.
“You cannot suspend me from my own company.”
Adrian corrected him quietly.
“It was never entirely yours.”
Kyle spun around.
I saw the instant the hidden architecture of his success began assembling itself in his mind.
The impossible bank approvals.
The investors who had appeared after our wedding.
The government contract secured through a foundation introduction.
The emergency credit line that had rescued him when his first expansion failed.
He had called those events proof of his genius.
In truth, my father had opened doors for me, and I had held them open for my husband.
Kyle had walked through without once looking back.
The chairman was still speaking.
Kyle’s voice dropped.
“How much has been frozen?”
He listened.
His knees seemed to weaken.
“All of it?”
Adrian closed his case.
“The company’s operating funds have not been seized,” he explained.
“They have been placed under temporary dual-control protection.
Payroll and legitimate expenses will continue.
Your personal access has been suspended pending review.”
“You cannot do this in five minutes.”
“The documents were prepared years ago.
Your wife’s call activated them.”
Kyle ended the call without saying goodbye.
Thalia moved toward him.
“Kyle, you told me the company was untouchable.”
He ignored her.
He looked at me as though he had never seen me before.
“Who are you?”
