Chapter 3 — He Punished His Wife—Then Her Father Activated the Truth

I finally stood.

My legs trembled, but my voice did not.

“The woman you married.”

“No.

Your father—who is he really?”

“You knew his name.”

“I knew the name you gave me.”

“I gave you my mother’s surname because my father wanted to know whether you loved me before you understood what I inherited.”

Kyle’s mouth opened, then closed.

Before our marriage, my father had warned me that Kyle admired power more than character.

I had defended him.

I had insisted that his ambition came from fear, not greed.

My father had agreed to help him on one condition: Kyle would never know the true scale of the support unless I chose to tell him.

I never did.

Not because I enjoyed deceiving him, but because every year gave me another reason to remain silent.

Kyle became more arrogant with each success.

He treated employees as though their livelihoods proved his importance.

He humiliated junior executives in meetings.

He began speaking of me as an accessory rather than a partner.

Still, I stayed.

I told myself the man I loved was buried beneath pressure.

Then Thalia appeared.

At first, she was merely a communications consultant with an exceptional talent for flattering him.

She laughed before he finished jokes.

She repeated his opinions as though they were discoveries.

Within months, she attended meetings that had nothing to do with her department.

When I questioned it, Kyle accused me of insecurity.

When I found hotel charges, he called them client expenses.

When Thalia began wearing jewelry identical to pieces I had admired, he said coincidence was not evidence.

He was right about one thing.

Coincidence was not evidence.

That was why my father’s investigators collected receipts, transfers, apartment records, security footage, and corporate expense reports.

Adrian placed a second folder on the table.

“This contains seventeen months of transactions,” he said.

“Ms.

Thalia Mercer received housing, travel, jewelry, clothing, and medical payments through companies funded by trust-backed credit.”

Thalia’s face changed at the mention of medical payments.

Kyle noticed.

“What medical payments?” he asked.

She looked toward the door.

One of the security officers shifted, blocking the path without touching her.

Adrian answered.

“Prenatal appointments.”

Kyle exhaled as though relieved.

“She told you.

She is carrying my child.”

“I did not dispute the pregnancy,” Adrian said.

“I am documenting the source of the payments.”

I looked at Thalia.

She had used my family’s money to monitor the child she planned to use to replace me.

The realization hurt, but it no longer controlled me.

Kyle stepped toward me.

“We can fix this.”

The speed of his transformation was almost breathtaking.

Minutes earlier, he had called me dead weight.

Now his voice was soft, intimate, almost pleading.
