The dumpster lid rose three inches before the officer stopped pulling.

Something beneath the layers of damp cardboard had moved.

He shifted the crowbar, forced the lid higher, and aimed his flashlight into the darkness.

The beam crossed torn grocery bags, crushed cartons, and a woman’s pale hand trembling beneath a flattened produce box.

“We have a person inside!” he shouted.

The alley exploded into movement.

The second officer called for paramedics.

The produce worker backed into the loading dock.

The woman in scrubs dropped her coffee and rushed forward, identifying herself as a nurse.

Ethan tried to climb into the dumpster.

“Mom!”

Michael caught him around the waist before he reached the rim.

“Let them get her out,” Michael said, though his own voice was shaking.

“They’re helping her now.”

Vanessa stood completely still.

Owen did not.

He took three steps toward the silver minivan before the second officer blocked his path.

“Stay where you are.”

“I’m getting a blanket,” Owen said.

“There are blankets in the ambulance.”

The officer placed one hand near his belt.

Owen stopped moving.

Two paramedics arrived within minutes and climbed onto the dumpster’s side rail.

They lifted cardboard away until the woman’s face appeared.

She was in her early thirties, dressed in dark pants and a thin gray sweater.

Her hair was matted against her forehead.

One shoe was missing.

A strip of silver tape hung loosely from one wrist, as though she had worked it free during the night.

Her eyes opened when Ethan called again.

“Mom, it’s me.”

Her lips moved.

The nurse leaned closer.

“She said Ethan.”

That single word silenced every person who had laughed.

The paramedics secured the woman onto a rescue board and lifted her over the rim.

Ethan twisted free from Michael the moment her feet touched the pavement.

“Sarah!” Vanessa cried, suddenly rushing forward.

“Oh my God, what happened to you?”

Sarah recoiled at the sound of her sister’s voice.

She turned her head toward Ethan instead.

“My baby.”

Ethan grabbed her fingertips because the paramedics would not let him climb onto the stretcher.

“I stayed,” he said.

“I told them you were alive.”

Sarah tried to answer, but her teeth were chattering too hard.

Then she saw Vanessa behind him.

Fear sharpened her exhausted face.

“The blue folder,” she whispered.

“Their van.

Don’t let them take Ethan.”

The first officer heard her.

So did Michael.

Vanessa immediately began speaking over them.

“She’s confused.

Sarah has panic attacks.

She stopped taking care of herself after her husband died.
