“Ungrateful girl.
Everything I built was meant to become yours.”
“You built debt in my name.”
“I built a future for this family.”
Kyle opened the folder and removed the final page of the proposed capital agreement.
“The first transfer was scheduled for Monday,” he said.
“It required confirmation that all Fairfax representations were accurate and that Olivia entered the marriage voluntarily, without coercion or undisclosed legal exposure.”
Richard stared at the paper.
Kyle continued.
“You lied about the debt.
You forged her signatures.
And you beat her until she agreed to marry me.”
“You cannot prove the bruises came from me.”
Olivia reached for the phone.
“There’s more,” she said.
Richard’s expression changed.
She scrolled through the recordings.
There were seven in total, captured over the previous six months.
Her father threatening to have her declared mentally incompetent if she challenged the accounts.
Her mother begging him to stop striking her, then warning Olivia not to tell anyone.
Richard ordering a company employee to imitate Olivia’s signature.
Richard promising that the Varelli money would erase every missing dollar before auditors noticed.
Olivia had recorded each conversation in secret, then hidden copies in a cloud account her father did not know existed.
She had not been waiting for a hero.
She had been building a door.
Kyle listened without interrupting.
Richard attempted to speak twice, but every denial was answered by his own recorded voice.
When the final file ended, he turned on Olivia.
“You planned this.”
She met his gaze.
“I survived you.”
“You think he will protect you?” Richard shouted, pointing at Kyle.
“Men like him don’t protect women.
They own them.
You have exchanged one master for another.”
Olivia went pale, because the words struck the exact fear she had carried since the engagement was announced.
Kyle did not defend himself.
Instead, he removed the wedding ring from his finger and set it on the table.
Richard blinked.
Kyle looked at Olivia.
“The marriage can be annulled.
Tonight, if that is what you choose.
You can leave this estate under guard, stay in any property you select, and speak to an attorney who has never worked for either family.
No money, contract, or name will be used to keep you here.”
Olivia stared at the ring.
Richard recovered first.
“There.
You see? Without the alliance, you are useless to him.”
Kyle’s eyes remained on Olivia.
“Your father is trying to turn freedom into rejection because he knows you have never been allowed to choose either one.”
The truth of it settled over her more heavily than the wedding veil had.
All day, people had asked whether she accepted Kyle as her husband.
Not one had cared whether the answer was freely given.
Now the most feared man in Chicago was offering to undo the vow without demanding anything in return.
“What happens to him?” she asked.
“That is also your decision.”
