“I heard.”

“How do you feel?”

He nodded, understanding more than she had explained.
Olivia crossed the room and placed his wedding ring on the windowsill between them.

“You offered to let me leave,” she said.
“The offer still stands.”
“I know.”
She picked up the ring.
Kyle watched her carefully.
“Olivia, you don’t owe me a marriage because I helped expose him.”
“I know that too.”
“Then be certain.”
She stepped closer.
This time, when he lifted his hand, he stopped before touching her face.
Olivia closed the remaining distance herself.
“I was forced to become your wife,” she said.
“But staying is my decision.”
Kyle’s fingers rested gently against her cheek.
“May I?” he asked.
She placed the ring back on his hand.
“Yes.”
There was no priest, no crowd, and no alliance waiting downstairs.
No father gripping her arm.
