The folder opened between Preston’s keys and Henry’s blue superhero mask.
For several seconds, my husband did not move.
The first page was not a divorce petition.
That would have been too easy, too predictable, and far too early.
It was a copy of the Lake Forest property record held with my father’s estate documents.
Preston looked at the page, then at me.
“Why are you showing me this?”
I closed the folder before he could reach for it.
“Because you seem confused about where you are.”
His mouth tightened.
He was still wearing the black suit from Brooke’s photograph.
The same suit I had chosen for him, paid for, and handed to him on our anniversary while he kissed my forehead and told me he had never been happier.
Now there was a faint trace of perfume at his collar that was not mine.
He glanced toward the staircase.
“Is Henry asleep?”
“He waited until he couldn’t keep his eyes open.”
Preston rubbed his forehead as though our son’s disappointment were another business problem I had placed on his desk.
“Evelyn, I had an emergency.”
“In Coronado?”
His hand stopped.
For the first time, the arrogance slipped.
Only for a second.
Then he recovered.
“Who told you I was in Coronado?”
I took out my phone but kept the screen facing me.
“Brooke did.”
His face changed again.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
That told me more than an apology ever could have.
“She contacted you?”
“One hour before Henry’s party.”
He muttered something under his breath and walked toward the bar in the adjoining room.
“I told her not to do anything stupid.”
I almost laughed.
There it was.
Not denial.
Not shock.
Not even embarrassment that his wife had learned about another woman.
His first concern was that Brooke had ignored his instructions.
He poured himself a drink.
“Whatever she sent you, it isn’t what you think.”
“She sent me a photograph of you sitting beside her in a wedding suit while she wore a veil.”
“It wasn’t a wedding.”
“I know.”
That answer caught him off guard.
He stared at me over the rim of his glass.
“Then why are we doing this?”
I looked at the superhero mask beside his keys.
“Because while your five-year-old son was asking whether his father was coming home, you were playing husband to your assistant in California.”
Preston’s expression hardened.
“Brooke is not just my assistant.”
“I noticed.”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When? Before or after she announced herself as your real wife?”
He set the glass down too hard.
