“This has nothing to do with me personally.

My accountants set that company up years ago.”

Blackwood nodded.

“You certified yourself as its sole owner.”

“That doesn’t mean Ethan did anything wrong.”

“No one said his name yet.”

Vanessa stopped.

It was the first serious mistake she made.

Blackwood looked toward Ethan now.

Ethan’s face hardened.

“You’re implying misconduct based on ordinary consulting expenses.”

Blackwood removed a signed disclosure form.

“No.

I’m relying on your annual conflict certification.”

Claire remembered the document.

Every board officer had signed one.

It required them to disclose financial relationships with vendors, contractors, and anyone whose personal relationship could reasonably affect foundation decisions.

Ethan had checked no conflicts.

He had signed his name beneath it.

Weeks later, he approved another Mercer invoice.

“Vanessa was providing legitimate services,” Ethan said.

“Then why identify her to the board as an independent consultant you had no personal relationship with?” Helen asked.

Ethan looked at Claire instead of answering.

“This is what you wanted?”

Claire’s ankle throbbed.

She leaned against the table but kept her voice even.

“What I wanted was for my husband not to lie to me, divert money through his mistress’s company, and stand still while she shoved me.”

“You don’t understand the finances.”

There it was.

For years Ethan had used that sentence whenever Claire asked about complex transactions.

You don’t understand the finances.

She had a graduate degree, had helped establish the foundation, and had signed the earliest donor agreements beside him.

Still, whenever Ethan wanted a conversation to end, he spoke to her as though money became mathematics only he could read.

Blackwood opened a third section of the folder.

“Mrs.

Whitmore understood enough to notice an attempted transfer from a jointly controlled family-office reserve on Thursday.”

Ethan went still.

Vanessa whispered, “Ethan.”

Claire heard it.

So did several others.

Blackwood continued.

“The transfer was placed on hold before completion because Mrs.

Whitmore is a required joint authorizer.”

“You froze our accounts?” Ethan demanded.

“The accounts I am legally responsible for,” Claire said.

“You had no right to ambush me here.”

Claire looked around the terrace.

At the maternal health banners placed discreetly among the flowers.

At the donors who had been asked to trust Ethan with money intended to help women through pregnancy and childbirth.

At the fragments of the glass she had been holding when Vanessa struck her.

“You brought her here,” Claire said.

“You created the location.”

Ethan’s expression shifted from anger to calculation.

He lowered his voice.

“Claire, think carefully.

Whatever happens to me affects you.
