Ethan read it and closed his eyes for half a second.
Vanessa stepped backward.
Her heel touched a fragment of broken crystal.
“Those messages are being taken out of context.”
Helen looked at her.
“What context makes them better?”
Vanessa had no answer.
Peter approached Claire again.
This time Claire accepted his arm.
The adrenaline was fading, and her ankle hurt more now.
She was not going to prove strength by ignoring her body.
Blackwood noticed immediately.
“We’re finished for today,” he said.
Ethan objected.
“We are not finished.”
“No,” Helen replied.
“You’re simply no longer controlling the conversation.”
As one of the senior independent directors, Helen asked the board members present to remain after Claire left.
The foundation’s outside accounting firm would be contacted that afternoon.
Access to discretionary accounts would be suspended pending review.
Ethan would temporarily step aside from approval authority.
He stared at her.
“You can’t do that on a terrace.”
“We can protect the foundation on a terrace,” Helen said.
“The formal vote can happen inside.”
For the first time, Ethan looked genuinely lost.
His authority had always seemed physical to Claire.
He entered rooms expecting them to arrange themselves around him.
Now the room had stopped moving.
Vanessa tried one final time to regain control.
She pointed at Claire.
“This is because she’s jealous.”
Claire looked at her.
“No.”
She glanced at the passport copy.
“This is because you both thought changing a name changed the paper trail.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Claire continued.
“And the marriage ended before Mr.
Blackwood walked through that gate.”
Ethan stared at her.
She had never said the words aloud before.
There was no triumph in saying them.
Only clarity.
The vineyard security manager arrived moments later.
Peter had already asked him to preserve the terrace camera footage because of Claire’s fall.
Vanessa again insisted the shove had been accidental.
She stopped talking when Peter quietly confirmed the camera covered the barrel area.
Claire did not stay to watch the footage.
She had something more important to protect than the satisfaction of seeing Vanessa panic.
Blackwood drove behind her car while Peter arranged for a staff member to accompany her to a nearby medical facility.
Claire called her obstetrician on the way.
The examination took hours.
