Chapter 2 — Maya Stopped the CEO’s Deaf Son From Eating Leftovers—Then His Father Arrived

4.9Editorial score

Maya moved beside Noah so he could still see his father.

Daniel stood.

“Do not block his hands again.”

The calmness in his voice frightened Vanessa more than shouting would have.

She folded her arms.

“You are taking the word of a child you just found digging through garbage.”

Mrs.

Romano appeared in the kitchen doorway.

She was a broad-shouldered woman in her sixties, with flour on her black apron and silver hair pinned behind her head.

“Maya does not dig through garbage,” she said.

“I leave food for her family because her mother is sick.”

Maya’s face reddened.

Mrs.

Romano placed a protective hand on her shoulder.

“And that boy did not wander here alone.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“What are you suggesting?”

“I saw your car.”

The alley seemed to shrink around them.

Mrs.

Romano pointed toward a small black camera above the service door.

“It records the loading area.”

Vanessa looked up.

For the first time, her polished expression broke completely.

Daniel followed her gaze.

“Show me.”

Inside the restaurant, the warm smell of tomato sauce and bread surrounded them.

A waiter brought Noah a bowl of soup, but he would not touch it until Maya sat beside him.

She divided the remaining bread in half and placed one piece near his bowl.

Daniel watched the gesture.

His son trusted a child he had known for less than an hour more than he trusted the woman Daniel had brought into their home.

Mrs.

Romano led Daniel to a computer behind the counter.

Vanessa remained near the door, gripping her handbag so tightly that the leather bent beneath her fingers.

The footage had no sound, but it did not need any.

At 6:12 p.m., Vanessa’s black car pulled into the service lane.

She got out, opened the rear door, and pointed toward the dumpsters.

Noah remained inside.

Vanessa leaned into the car and pulled him out by the wrist.

He signed something to her.

She did not look at his hands.

She pointed at the discarded food, returned to the driver’s seat, and drove away.

The recording continued.

Noah stood alone for nearly three minutes before sitting against the wall.

At 6:24, Maya entered the alley carrying her container.

At 6:27, Vanessa sent Daniel the message claiming Noah was asleep at home.

Daniel replayed that section twice.

Vanessa moved toward him.

“I was teaching him a lesson.”

Daniel turned.

“A lesson?”

“He refuses meals.

He throws tantrums.

Every specialist says consistency matters.”

“What specialist told you to abandon a five-year-old behind a restaurant?”

“No one abandoned him.
