Chapter 5 — My Children Abandoned Me—Then a Millionaire Opened One Folder

4.9Editorial score

Thomas had no answer.

That was the moment I finally understood the lesson Richard had promised.

He had not planned revenge.

He did not need to threaten my children, humiliate them, or use his money against them.

His existence beside me had simply exposed something ugly.

When they thought I was alone, they had felt powerful.

When they discovered a wealthy man had witnessed the result of their actions, they panicked.

The shame was not that Richard Grant knew.

The shame was that they cared more about Richard knowing than about what had happened to me.

Later that afternoon, Thomas and Paula arrived at Richard’s gate.

I had not invited them.

Richard’s security system alerted him, and he showed me the camera view without letting them inside.

Thomas stood rigid beside the car.

Paula kept folding her arms and unfolding them.

“Do you want to see them?” Richard asked.

I thought about the airport curb.

Thomas driving away before I could hug him.

Paula laughing when she thought I couldn’t hear.

The canceled ticket.

My missing wallet.

The cold floor beneath me.

Then I thought about my entire life as their mother.

I had spent decades rushing to fix every discomfort they experienced.

Maybe love did not require me to keep doing that.

“Yes,” I said.

“But here.

Not alone.”

Richard let them into the sitting room.

The transformation was immediate.

Thomas wore the polite expression he used with important people.

Paula’s posture was careful and restrained.

Richard did not play along.

He shook neither hand.

“Your mother is here because she chose to speak with you,” he said.

“This is her conversation.”

Then he sat beside me, not in front of me.

Thomas looked at me.

“Mom, this has gotten completely out of control.”

I waited.

Paula tried next.

“We came because we’re worried about you.”

“When did you start worrying?”

Her face tightened.

“That’s unfair.”

“Was it yesterday, when I had no ticket? Or today, when you learned Richard’s last name?”

Paula looked away.

Thomas leaned forward.

“Nobody abandoned you.

There was a misunderstanding with the flight.”

I opened my notebook.

Richard had encouraged me to write facts, and now I read them aloud.

The cancellation time.

The phone number associated with it.

The quoted price of the replacement flight.

The time Thomas had dropped me at the curb.

The missing wallet and phone.
