Chapter 7 — My Children Abandoned Me—Then a Millionaire Opened One Folder

4.9Editorial score

“So you canceled it.”

He looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

There was the truth.

No airline error.

No misplaced belongings.

No confused old mother.

My children had deliberately stranded me.

Thomas tried to explain that they were tired of feeling responsible for me.

Paula said my visits made them feel guilty because I always reminded them, merely by being there, of how much I had sacrificed.

I listened until they ran out of excuses.

Then I asked, “When have I asked either of you for money?”

Neither answered.

“When have I asked you to support me?”

Silence.

“When have I demanded repayment for raising you?”

Paula covered her face.

“You don’t have to say it.”

“Apparently I do.”

I stood and placed my wallet in my purse.

“You didn’t abandon me because I was dependent on you.

You abandoned me because my love made you uncomfortable, and instead of talking to me, you decided to punish me.”

Thomas whispered, “Mom, I’m sorry.”

For years, those words would have ended everything.

I would have hugged him, told him we all make mistakes, and carried the pain home by myself.

This time I stayed where I was.

“What are you sorry for?”

He looked up.

The question unsettled him.

“For everything.”

“That’s not an answer.”

His eyes filled.

Slowly, painfully, he named it.

Canceling the flight.

Taking my phone.

Leaving me at the airport.

Not calling.

Lying afterward.

Paula did the same.

Richard never interrupted.

That was his lesson too, I realized.

He had given me a safe room, a phone, a plane ticket if I wanted one, and enough quiet to hear my own judgment again.

He had not rescued me by fighting my children.

He had rescued me by refusing to help me excuse them.

I did not forgive Thomas and Paula that afternoon.

I also did not disown them.

Real consequences were less theatrical than either choice.

I told them I was returning to Phoenix on my own terms.

There would be no casual visits for a while.

They would not have keys to my home.

They would not manage my travel plans.

If they wanted a relationship with me, they would build one through consistent behavior, not emergency apologies offered in a millionaire’s living room.

Paula cried harder.

Thomas nodded with his face lowered.

Before they left, Richard finally spoke directly to them.

“You seem very interested in what I think of you.”
