“Friend?”

The room seemed to contract.

I reached into my clutch.

My mother noticed first.

“What are you doing?”

I took out the ring.

It was not enormous.

Nathan knew me better than that.

A narrow platinum band, a simple diamond, clean lines.

I slipped it onto my finger.

Then I said, “Nathan is my husband.”

No one laughed.

Allison stared at my hand.

My father stared at Nathan.

My mother actually took a step backward.

“Your what?”

“My husband.”

“You’re married?” Allison asked.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

My mother’s face changed from shock to injury with astonishing speed.

“You got married without telling us?”

I looked at her.

“Mom, twenty minutes ago you watched Dad push me into a fountain.”

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Dad found his voice first.

“This is ridiculous.

If you were married, why hide it?”

“I didn’t hide it from the people who are part of my life.”

That landed harder than shouting would have.

Allison looked as though I had slapped her.

“You didn’t tell your own sister?”

“You haven’t called me in eight months unless you needed something for this wedding.”

“That is not true.”

“You called once about hotel recommendations, twice about vendor contracts, and once because Bradford wanted someone to review a commercial lease.”

Bradford looked down.

Allison’s face reddened.

Nathan still had not raised his voice.

He touched my elbow gently.

“Do you want to leave?”

That was the question I had expected.

Then I saw my father’s expression.

Relief.

He thought Nathan would take me away and the wedding would continue.

He thought the room would recover, the orchestra would restart, and by dessert he could turn the whole thing into a funny story about his oversensitive daughter.

I looked toward the terrace.

“No,” I said.

“Not yet.”

Dad’s relief disappeared.

Nathan followed my gaze.

“What do you want?”

“The truth preserved.”

The security man near the terrace turned at those words.

Nathan nodded to him.
