Chapter 7 — My Father Humiliated Me at the Wedding—Then My Husband Walked In

4.9Editorial score

“We can escort Mr.

Campbell from the property if you wish.”

Allison gasped.

“You cannot throw my father out of my wedding.”

The director answered professionally.

“The hotel can remove a guest who has assaulted another guest.”

Allison looked at Nathan.

“This is your doing.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.

Your father’s actions are his doing.”

That sentence hung in the room.

My father stood abruptly.

“I’ll leave.”

Mom grabbed his arm.

“Robert.”

“No.

Apparently I’m some kind of criminal now.”

He looked at me, waiting for me to rescue him from his own humiliation.

I knew that look.

I had responded to it my entire life.

Apologize.

Smooth it over.

Make Dad feel big again.

I did nothing.

Two hotel security officers approached.

Dad laughed bitterly.

“Fine.

Enjoy your victory, Meredith.”

I said, “This isn’t a victory.”

He paused.

“It’s a consequence.”

His mouth tightened.

Then he walked toward the doors.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody laughed.

That mattered too.

My mother followed several steps behind him, then stopped and looked back at me.

For a second I thought she might come to me.

Instead she whispered, “You’ve changed.”

“Yes.”

She waited for more.

There wasn’t any.

She followed my father out.

The doors closed behind them.

Allison stood beside Bradford beneath hundreds of thousands of dollars of flowers and lighting, looking suddenly very young.

“You really married him?” she asked.

The question had lost its sharpness.

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every important thing I ever brought home became a competition.”

Her eyes filled.

“I wouldn’t have done that.”

I looked at her.

She looked away first.

Bradford touched her hand.
