Chapter 2 — My Husband Brought His Mistress Home—Then My Guest Walked In

4.9Editorial score

I knew about the unfamiliar perfume that once clung to his jacket.

But suspicion is a strange prison.

Every clue makes you feel foolish for staying, while every missing piece makes you feel foolish for accusing.

So I had waited.

And Ethan had mistaken my silence for blindness.

When Madison’s husband contacted me, I asked one question.

“Are you certain?”

His answer arrived immediately.

“Yes.”

He had seen enough messages and enough pieces of their shared story to know Ethan wasn’t simply a coworker or friend.

I didn’t need every detail.

Eight months was enough.

That number mattered because Ethan himself confirmed it less than six hours later while standing in our living room.

Madison had apparently told her husband something very different about where she would be that evening.

And Ethan had believed Madison was completely free to build a future with him.

Now both lies were occupying the same room.

Ethan looked at her.

“You’re married?”

Madison swallowed.

Her husband’s mouth tightened.

“Interesting question coming from you.”

Ethan ignored him.

“Madison.”

She reached for her purse as though holding it gave her something solid to cling to.

“It’s complicated.”

I leaned back in my chair.

That phrase almost impressed me.

Not because it was convincing.

Because it was exactly the kind of phrase Ethan had spent years mocking whenever other people used it to excuse bad behavior.

Ethan’s voice rose.

“You told me you were separated.”

Madison closed her eyes.

Her husband looked at her.

“You told him that?”

She snapped, “We basically are.”

“No,” he said.

“We aren’t.”

Ethan stared at her.

I watched the calculation begin behind his eyes.

Until that moment, he had entered our house believing he controlled the evening.

He had brought Madison home because he believed his confession made him brave.

He thought declaring the affair transformed eight months of deception into honesty.

He had probably imagined me crying while he explained that feelings changed and nobody could help who they loved.

Instead, the woman beside him had a husband he apparently knew nothing about.

Suddenly Ethan wasn’t delivering revelations.

He was receiving them.

“This is insane,” he muttered.

Madison’s husband looked toward me.

“You okay?”

It was the first time anyone had asked me that all evening.

I nodded once.

Ethan noticed.

“Oh, that’s good,” he said bitterly.

“You two are already a team now?”

I looked at him.

“No, Ethan.
