Chapter 3 — My Husband Brought His Mistress Home—Then My Guest Walked In

We’re two people whose spouses lied to them.”

His jaw tightened.

“That doesn’t mean you bring some stranger into our house.”

I glanced at Madison.

“You did.”

He had no answer for that.

Madison suddenly stepped toward me.

“Claire, I didn’t come here to hurt you.”

It was the wrong thing to say.

Not because I wanted an apology.

Because she had walked through my front door on my quiet night, taken a wine glass from my anniversary table, and stood beside my husband while he announced their affair.

Whatever she had intended no longer mattered.

“You knew he was married,” I said.

She looked down.

“Yes.”

Her husband flinched almost imperceptibly.

Ethan interrupted.

“Don’t put this all on her.”

I turned toward him.

“I’m not.”

“Because our marriage had problems long before Madison.”

There it was.

The defense he had been saving.

He began listing grievances with the confidence of someone presenting evidence in court.

We worked too much.

We stopped traveling.

I had become distant.

He felt invisible.

We argued about money.

I didn’t laugh at his jokes the way I used to.

Some of it was true.

Marriages do become tired.

People become distracted.

Resentments accumulate quietly in kitchens and bedrooms and cars.

But Ethan was using ordinary cracks to excuse the decision he had made to break the wall.

When he finished, I asked him one question.

“Did any of those problems force you to lie for eight months?”

He went quiet.

“Did they force you to bring her into our home tonight?”

Nothing.

“Did they force you to tell me you wanted honesty only after you had already arranged everything to benefit you?”

His face hardened.

Madison’s husband looked away, almost as though the question had landed somewhere inside his own marriage too.

Madison finally spoke.

“Can we please not do this here?”

Her husband turned back to her.

“Where would you prefer? The place you told me you were tonight?”

She paled again.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“What did she tell you?”

Madison shook her head quickly.

“Ethan, stop.”

“What did you tell him?”

She refused to answer.

That silence told Ethan more than any explanation could have.

He stepped away from her.
