Chapter 6 — My Husband Called Dad’s Motel Worthless—Eleven Strangers Were Waiting Inside

4.9Editorial score

“Why he chose you for this.”

I looked down at the key rack.

For most of my life, I had thought being the daughter who showed up for the unglamorous things meant I was the daughter people overlooked.

Dad had seen the same trait and trusted it with the one inheritance that could not simply sit in an account.

The night Brian threw me out, I drove to Sunset Ridge believing I had been discarded twice in one day: first by my father’s will, then by my husband.

By morning, I understood how wrong I had been about one of them.

My father had not left me behind.

He had left me a door people could still walk through when the rest of their lives had temporarily closed.

And every time I placed a key in someone’s hand, I understood his final gift a little better.

It had never been the motel.

It was the trust.
