Chapter 5 — My Husband Walked Into Dinner and Saw His Affair Enlarged Six Feet Tall

4.9Editorial score

He looked toward his family, searching for support.

Usually he would have found it instantly.

His sisters had defended him through failed jobs, unpaid debts, forgotten birthdays, and every argument in which he portrayed me as unreasonable.

Neither moved.

Arthur was still watching Chloe.

“Was it once?” he asked her.

Chloe looked exhausted now.

The polished confidence she carried into every room had disappeared.

“Arthur, please.”

“Was it once?”

Trevor interrupted.

“Dad, enough.”

Arthur rounded on him.

“You do not get to tell me when this is enough.”

Trevor stepped back.

I had never heard Arthur speak to his son that way.

Chloe pressed her lips together.

Then she said the sentence that finished what the photograph had started.

“It wasn’t supposed to become this.”

Arthur went still.

His older daughter whispered, “Oh my God.”

Trevor cursed under his breath.

Chloe looked at me with naked resentment.

“She wanted this spectacle.”

I shook my head.

“You sent the photograph.”

“Because I was tired of pretending.”

Arthur flinched.

Not visibly enough for anyone who did not know him, perhaps, but I saw it.

Chloe continued because people who have controlled a room for years sometimes mistake losing control for a reason to talk more.

“Trevor kept saying he would handle things.

He never did.”

Trevor stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Telling the truth, apparently.

Isn’t that what everyone wants?”

The cruelty in her voice was familiar, but now it had nowhere safe to land.

Arthur pulled off his wedding ring.

He did it slowly.

Chloe stopped speaking.

He looked down at the ring in his palm, then closed his fingers around it.

“I’m leaving tonight,” he said.

“Arthur—”

“Not with you.”

Her face finally broke.

Trevor tried to intervene again.

“Dad, don’t make some huge decision because Brooke staged this.”

Arthur looked at his son with an expression I will never forget.

“Brooke didn’t put you in that bed.”

Silence.

The sentence ended every argument Trevor still thought he could make.

Arthur walked toward the door, then stopped beside me.

For years, this man had watched his wife cut me down and had decided keeping the peace was easier than asking whether I was telling the truth.

His apology came quietly.

“I should have listened to you before.”

I did not rescue him from the discomfort of saying it.
