The additional expenses were the problem.
Then Rodrigo called asking whether I could make the mortgage payment a few days early because Vanessa wanted to avoid a late fee.
I canceled the appointment.
I never told him that part directly.
I had assumed a mother was supposed to protect her children from the cost of what she gave them.
I no longer believed that.
“I delayed care so I could make sure your payment cleared,” I said.
Rodrigo stared at the floor.
Vanessa’s voice was quieter.
“Why would you do that?”
I looked at her.
“Because every month I was told this would be the last difficult one.”
Rodrigo stood abruptly.
“Okay.
Fine.
I’ll pay it.”
“Good.”
“I said I’ll pay it.”
“I heard you.”
He seemed irritated that I did not react with relief.
“But I need time.”
“Call the bank.”
“They’ll want money now.”
“Then make arrangements with them.”
His face hardened.
“You really don’t care if we lose the apartment?”
That hurt more than I expected.
Not because the accusation was true.
Because it revealed what he believed love required from me.
As long as I sacrificed, I cared.
The moment I stopped sacrificing, I became cruel.
I stood and began gathering the statements.
“I cared enough to help you buy it.
I cared enough to pay for twenty-seven months.
I cared enough to cover insurance and fees and furniture.
I cared enough to keep quiet when you treated all of it as though it came from nowhere.”
Rodrigo’s eyes followed my hands.
“What do you want from me?”
“Nothing.”
That answer unsettled him more than any demand could have.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I am finished negotiating for permission to be respected.”
Vanessa scoffed.
“There.
That’s what this is really about.
You want access to our home whenever you want because you paid some bills.”
I turned toward her.
“No.
I do not want access to your home whenever I want.”
She paused.
“You wanted privacy.
You have it.
I will call before visiting.
I will respect an invitation or the lack of one.
Those are reasonable boundaries.”
For the first time, she seemed unsure how to respond.
