Chapter 4 — He Left His Pregnant Wife for Cabo—Then His Billionaire Father Entered

4.9Editorial score

I let my son speak for you.

That was my mistake.”

It was not a magical reconciliation.

Rachel did not suddenly trust him because Bradley had lied.

But she believed the regret in his voice.

More importantly, Thomas did not ask her to forgive him.

He asked what she wanted done next.

Rachel looked at the phone on the bedside table.

For years, Bradley had made decisions and then explained why they were good for her.

This time she answered without asking permission.

“I want copies of everything he did.”

Thomas nodded.

“I want my own lawyer.

Not his.

Not the company’s.

Not yours.”

Another nod.

“And I want whatever can legally be preserved frozen until someone tells me exactly what belongs to whom.”

“That can be arranged through the proper process.”

Rachel swallowed.

“And I don’t want Bradley near the babies unless the hospital says I have to allow it.”

Thomas stood.

“I’ll tell the staff that is your request.”

Rachel caught his sleeve before he turned away.

“The house.

Is it really gone?”

Thomas sat again.

“No.”

She stared at him.

“The message said my name had been removed.”

“He wanted you to believe that.

He submitted a change.

It did not become effective.”

“Why?”

“Because the property is held through the residential trust I created when you married.

Bradley cannot remove you by sending instructions to a title office.

Your consent and trustee approval were required.”

Rachel felt something loosen inside her chest.

“What about the accounts?”

“Some money was moved.

I won’t lie to you about that.

The banks and lawyers are tracing it.”

“And my insurance?”

“The cancellation request was based on a marital-status change that had not legally happened.

The company has already corrected the record while the matter is reviewed.”

Rachel shut her eyes.

For the first time since entering the hospital, the ground beneath her felt solid enough to stand on someday.

Bradley arrived before dawn.

He did not come directly from Cabo because remorse had suddenly overwhelmed him.

He came because his system access was frozen, the audit committee had convened and his lawyers had told him his father was at St.

Mary’s with the documents Bradley believed were already handled.

Thomas saw him approaching from the far end of the surgical corridor.

Bradley was still wearing the cream dinner jacket from the ceremony.

The boutonnière at his lapel had wilted.

He looked exhausted, furious and offended by the inconvenience of consequences.

“Where is Rachel?” he demanded.
