Sarah recognized it now too.

My daughter tugged at my hand and pointed toward the tables where small desserts were arranged.

I bent down.

“Yes, I see them.”

Her attention moved happily away from the adults.

Caleb stared at her.

“She looks…”

He stopped.

I stood again.

For the first time since the ballroom doors opened, the confidence disappeared completely from him.

He looked less like the developer who could command a room and more like a man realizing that time had continued without his permission.

“Can I meet her?” he asked.

Sarah looked at him sharply.

I answered carefully.

“Not like this.”

His face tightened.

“I’m her father.”

“Yes.”

“Then why can’t I say hello to my own daughter?”

“Because she doesn’t know you.”

The words were quiet.

They landed hard anyway.

Caleb looked around the ballroom, suddenly aware that several people nearby had noticed the tension.

“This isn’t fair.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I said, “Fair would have been you meeting her when you first asked to and then following through.

Fair would have been showing up after she was born.

Fair would have been calling often enough that your voice meant something to her.”

He flinched.

“I was trying to give everyone space.”

“No.

You were waiting for fatherhood to become convenient.”

Sarah stepped backward.

Caleb turned.

“Sarah.”

She looked at him as though she were seeing a familiar building after someone had removed the façade.

“You told me Harper was using the pregnancy to make the divorce difficult.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

That was new information.

Caleb’s face changed.

“Sarah, I said the situation was complicated.”

“You said she kept creating reasons for you to stay involved.”

“I never asked him to stay married,” I said.

Sarah’s gaze came to me.

“I told him the pregnancy after he filed,” I continued.

“He asked for proof.

He got it.

After that, the choices were his.”

Sarah looked at Caleb.

“You asked for a paternity test?”

“This is none of your business.”

Her laugh contained no amusement.

“You made it my business when you told me I was the reason you finally escaped an unhappy marriage.”

“Lower your voice.”

There it was again.

The command.
