He began with brief, planned visits.

He learned what snacks she liked, which stuffed animal had to sit beside her, and how quickly she became furious when somebody tried to help with something she had decided to do herself.
He missed moments he could never recover.
Her first word.
Her first step.
The night she had a fever and slept against my chest until sunrise.
The morning she discovered rain and stood at the window laughing.
No apology could give those moments back to him.
That became his consequence.
Not humiliation at a gala.
Not losing Sarah.
Time.
He had treated time as though it would wait until he was ready, and it had not.
As for me, I stopped measuring my life against what Caleb regretted.
The award from that gala sits on a shelf in my office now, but it is not the object I remember most from that night.
I remember my daughter’s hand in mine.
I remember entering a room I had once considered avoiding because my former husband might be there.
