His eyes lifted toward the camera mounted above the porch.
Then he saw it.
I knew the exact moment he understood.
“You have cameras?”
“You didn’t answer me.”
He walked farther from the others.
“Listen, this isn’t what you think.”
I almost laughed.
I had spent days imagining that sentence, and somehow hearing it made me feel less wounded, not more.
It sounded so ordinary.
So rehearsed.
Like a line handed out to anyone caught standing where they had sworn they would never be.
“Who is Lauren?” I asked.
Alex stopped walking.
Behind him, she looked up.
“You know about Lauren?”
“That depends.
Which version would you like me to know?”
He exhaled hard.
“She works with me.”
“I know.”
“It’s not—”
“I know where she works.
I know she was in my house.
I know Megan posted a photograph and deleted it five minutes later.
And I know you lied so I would take a hospital shift while you brought everyone there without me.”
His voice dropped.
“You hired somebody to investigate me?”
Interesting.
Not an apology.
Not an explanation.
An accusation.
“Yes.”
“That is insane.”
Chloe’s eyes flashed toward me.
I stayed still.
“What was insane,” I said, “was convincing your wife to work while you held a family celebration in her house with another woman.”
Alex turned toward the group behind him.
Megan was watching him now.
Lauren had moved closer, trying to hear.
“Open the door,” he said.
“No.”
“You can’t leave my parents standing outside in this weather.”
“They have cars.”
“This is childish.”
“No.
Changing locks on property I own is administrative.”
He went quiet again.
Then came the version of Alex I had seen only a few times in our marriage: the one who became colder when charm stopped working.
“You’re humiliating me in front of my family.”
The words almost knocked the air out of me.
Not because they were cruel.
Because of how completely he believed them.
I looked at the frozen image of his family standing in my driveway and thought about the photograph from the hospital break room.
“Now you know what that feels like,” I said.
I ended the call.
