Chapter 4 — My Husband Brought Another Woman to My Lake House—Then His Key Failed

4.9Editorial score

“That’s called being married.”

“He told us you were basically separated.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The bridge he had built between his lies.

To me, the family trip was canceled.

To them, our marriage was already ending.

“What exactly did he tell you?”

Megan hesitated.

“That you two had decided to live separately emotionally until you figured things out.”

I nearly asked what that phrase meant, but I already knew: nothing.

It was fog.

Language designed to make betrayal sound like an administrative transition.

“Did he tell you I knew about Lauren?”

Another silence.

“He said you knew there was someone else.”

My stomach dropped even though I had expected it.

“And you believed him?”

“He’s my brother.”

“I was your sister-in-law for eleven years.”

Megan’s voice softened.

“I didn’t know he lied about the trip.”

“But you deleted the photo.”

She had no answer.

That told me enough.

I ended the call.

For the next twenty minutes, the cameras recorded what happens when people who believe they have control discover a locked door.

Alex argued with his father.

His mother sat in the passenger seat of one of the cars.

Lauren paced near the porch.

Megan kept checking her phone.

Then Alex did something that changed the situation from painful to useful.

He called a locksmith.

I knew because I received an alert from the security company when a fourth vehicle entered the driveway.

A man stepped out carrying a tool bag.

Alex met him halfway and gestured toward the door.

I called the locksmith company before he reached the porch.

“I’m the property owner,” I said.

“No one has permission to alter or bypass those locks.”

The dispatcher asked me to verify the address and my name.

I did.

A minute later, the locksmith’s phone rang.

On camera, he listened, looked at Alex, then shook his head.

Alex spread both arms.

The locksmith returned to his van.

That was when Lauren finally confronted him.

Even without perfect audio, I could hear pieces through the exterior microphone.

“You said this was handled.”

“It is.”

“She changed the locks.”

“I can see that.”

“You said she knew.”

Alex looked sharply toward the camera.

Lauren followed his gaze.

Her face changed.

And for the first time, I realized she might have been lied to too.
