Chapter 3 — My Husband Brought Another Woman to My Lake House—Then His Key Failed

My hands started shaking only afterward.

Chloe reached for the folded envelope.

“You still haven’t opened this.”

Ian had handed it to me that morning after saying there was more.

I had been afraid that whatever was inside would force me to make a decision before I was ready.

Now I slid a finger under the flap.

The first pages were ordinary: Lauren’s full name, her employer, confirmation that she worked in Alex’s department.

Then came dates.

Restaurant receipts.

Parking records.

Photographs taken in public places.

Alex and Lauren leaving the same restaurant on three different evenings when he had told me he was working late.

Lauren getting into his car after an office event.

Alex carrying two overnight bags into a small inn forty miles from our home on a weekend he claimed he was attending a conference.

No photograph showed anything explicit.

None needed to.

The pattern was enough to destroy the story he had been telling me.

Then I reached the page Ian had warned me about.

It was a copy of a message obtained from a public social-media exchange between Lauren and Megan weeks earlier, before Megan tightened her privacy settings.

Lauren had written, “Thank you for making me feel welcome.

I know the situation is complicated.”

Megan had replied, “You belong with us.

New year, fresh start.”

I read it twice.

Chloe whispered, “Oh, God.”

There was more.

A photograph from an earlier dinner showed Lauren beside Alex’s mother.

This had not begun at the lake house.

His family had known her.

They had welcomed her.

And while Alex was still coming home to me, kissing my cheek, sleeping beside me, and calling me honey, his family had been helping him build a second version of his life.

My phone started vibrating again.

This time Megan was calling.

I answered.

“What are you doing?” she demanded.

No hello.

No apology.

“What am I doing?”

“Alex says you changed the locks.

Mom is freezing.”

“Then take her somewhere warm.”

“You knew we were coming.”

I looked at the report.

“No, Megan.

I knew after you accidentally posted the photograph you meant to hide from me.”

Silence.

Then: “You saw that?”

“Yes.”

“It was up for like two minutes.”

“Five.”

Her breathing changed.

“I can explain.”

“Please do.”

“Well… things have been difficult between you and Alex.”

That was news to me.

“We’ve had arguments,” I said.
