Living alone.
Refusing to come back to the company.”
“Those are not signs of incompetence.”
“They are when the family’s future is at stake.”
There it was again.
The family did not mean all of us.
It meant my father’s authority, my mother’s status, and Connor’s comfort.
A commotion sounded in the hallway.
One of the security officers stepped aside, and Connor appeared behind him in a hospital gown beneath a gray robe.
His face was hollow from months of illness, and an IV pole rolled beside him.
“Mom?” he said.
My mother hurried toward him.
“You should be in your room.”
“I heard security talking.” His gaze found me.
“Harper’s awake?”
“Yes,” I said.
Relief crossed his face, followed by confusion as he noticed the photographs and documents spread across the table.
“What happened?”
My father answered too quickly.
“Your sister is upset and allowing this attorney to make wild accusations.”
Connor looked at our mother.
“Did she agree?”
No one answered.
He swallowed.
“You told me Harper had signed the donor forms.
You said she volunteered.”
My mother reached for his arm.
“We were handling it.”
“You said she wanted to help me.”
“She should want to help you.”
Connor pulled away from her.
The movement was small, but my mother reacted as though he had struck her.
“You cut her brakes?” he asked.
My father stepped between them.
“Be careful what you say.”
Connor stared at him.
“Did you?”
My father’s silence answered.
Connor gripped the IV pole until his knuckles whitened.
For most of my life, he had accepted every advantage our parents gave him.
He had rarely questioned what those advantages cost me.
But standing in that room, he finally saw the price written across my bandages.
“I don’t want her kidney,” he said.
My mother’s face collapsed.
“You need a transplant.”
“Not like this.”
“You could die.”
“So could she.”
“She was supposed to be unconscious,” my father snapped.
The room went utterly still.
He realized too late what he had said.
Vivian closed the folder.
A police detective entered with another officer.
Dr.
Patel had contacted law enforcement after the garage evidence reached the hospital.
The detective asked my parents to step into the hallway separately.
