Her mother entered alone.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then her mother noticed the laptop.
“Mason says you’re accusing him of something terrible.”
Sophia gave a quiet, bitter laugh.
“Of course that’s how he said it.”
“Honey, I don’t understand.”
Sophia turned toward her.
“You understood enough.”
Her mother went still.
There are arguments where people shout because nothing has ever been said before.
This wasn’t one of them.
This was an argument built from years of things everyone had avoided naming.
Sophia pulled the robe closer around herself.
“Every time I told you I was afraid of him, you said he was stressed.
Every time he broke something, you said he’d had a difficult week.
Every time I begged you not to leave me alone with him, you told me to stop creating trouble.”
Tears filled her mother’s eyes.
“I didn’t know—”
“You didn’t want to know.”
The words landed harder than shouting could have.
Her mother sat down.
For several seconds, Sophia stared at the floor.
Then she said, “He threatened your medical treatment to keep me quiet.”
Her mother’s face emptied of color.
“What?”
Sophia turned the laptop toward her but didn’t play the recording.
“I saved the emails.”
Her mother covered her mouth.
A pounding came from the hallway.
“Open this door,” Mason called.
Sophia’s mother immediately stood.
Fear moved across her face before she could hide it.
Sophia noticed.
So did I.
“Don’t,” Sophia said.
Her mother froze.
Mason knocked again.
“I know you’re in there.
We are leaving.
Now.”
Sophia walked to the door.
For one terrible second, I thought she might obey out of habit.
Instead she slid the deadbolt into place.
“No,” she said loudly enough for him to hear.
Silence followed.
Then Mason’s voice became soft.
“Sophia, sweetheart, you’re upset.
Preston is filling your head with nonsense.
Open the door and we’ll talk privately.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
I could see the old reflex fighting with the woman standing in front of me.
She didn’t answer.
My phone rang again.
Karen told me two local investigators were downstairs.
Because the wedding had become a potential evidence scene and Mason was still present, they wanted Sophia to meet them away from the guests if possible.
