Chapter 5 — He Mocked My Wife Until I Opened the Folder She’d Hidden for Years

4.9Editorial score

Sophia’s mother looked at him with a kind of horror that had finally replaced denial.

“What did you do to my daughter?”

Mason’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Not confusion.

Calculation.

“She’s lying,” he said.

Sophia didn’t move.

“Then why did you threaten me tonight?”

“I didn’t threaten you.”

She lifted her phone.

The message was already preserved.

Mason glanced at it and immediately changed tactics.

“That could mean anything.”

The investigator stepped closer.

“Then you’ll have an opportunity to explain it.”

Mason looked toward the entrance.

His confidence was evaporating in visible stages.

First came irritation.

Then disbelief.

Then anger.

Finally, fear.

At 4:42 a.m., Karen called again.

The emergency restraint had been authorized on the accounts connected to the suspected financial offenses.

It wasn’t a final forfeiture.

It wasn’t a declaration of guilt.

It was a temporary legal hold designed to prevent assets from disappearing while investigators examined the transactions.

But to Mason, it was the first crack in the fortress he’d spent years building.

His phone began ringing almost immediately.

He answered one call.

Whatever he heard made him turn away from the room.

“That’s impossible,” he hissed.

Another call arrived before the first had ended.

Then another.

He looked at me.

“What did you do?”

I shook my head.

“You did it.

Sophia just stopped hiding the evidence.”

Mason lunged verbally, not physically.

He called me vindictive.

He accused Sophia of manipulating me.

He told investigators they had no idea who they were dealing with.

Each sentence made him look smaller.

Sophia’s mother began crying.

“Stop,” she told him.

Mason ignored her.

“Sophia, tell them this is ridiculous.

Tell them you’ve always been emotional.”

There it was again.

The word he’d used downstairs in front of the guests.

Dramatic.

Emotional.

Unreliable.

The vocabulary of someone who had spent years preparing an excuse in case the truth escaped.
