Sophia walked toward him.
I almost stopped her, but she lifted one hand to tell me she was fine.
She stood several feet away from Mason.
“You told me nobody would ever believe me,” she said.
Mason’s face tightened.
“I never said that.”
One of the investigators glanced toward the copied recordings.
Sophia noticed.
So did Mason.
His face went pale.
“You kept those?”
Nobody answered.
He had answered enough himself.
By dawn, the celebration outside had ended.
The flowers were wilting.
Half-empty champagne glasses remained on tables.
The ballroom that had held our wedding hours earlier looked strange in the gray morning light.
Mason was taken into custody for questioning in connection with the evidence gathered overnight and the developing investigation.
The recordings were in police possession.
The relevant accounts had been temporarily frozen under legal authority while investigators traced the transactions.
As officers prepared to leave with him, his entire posture changed.
The man who had mocked Sophia, mocked me, and controlled her mother with money suddenly wanted mercy.
“Sophia,” he said.
“Please.
We can fix this.”
She stared at him.
He looked toward her mother.
“Tell her.
Tell her everything I did for this family.”
Her mother turned away.
Then Mason looked at me.
“Preston, come on.
You’re a reasonable man.”
That almost made me laugh.
Hours earlier, being reasonable had meant being weak to him.
Now he needed it to mean useful.
“This isn’t mine to forgive,” I said.
He looked back at Sophia.
“I’m sorry.”
She didn’t respond.
He tried again.
“Please.”
Sophia’s voice was steady.
“You aren’t sorry I was hurt.
You’re sorry someone finally believed me.”
Mason had no answer.
The officers led him away.
I expected Sophia to collapse afterward.
Instead she stood in the doorway watching the police vehicle disappear.
Then she quietly asked, “Is it really over?”
I knew better than to make a promise I couldn’t guarantee.
Investigations take time.
Courts take time.
Evidence gets challenged.
Families fracture in ways no legal order can repair overnight.
So I told her the truth.
